Things to Keep in Mind When Purchasing a New Motorcycle

There is nothing quite like hitting the open road on a motorcycle. The feeling of the wind blowing by as you travel down the roadway on your two-wheeled machine is sublime. Even the simple act of starting up the motorcycle’s engine for the first time before going on a trip is a satisfying sensation. The noises, the sights, the sounds, and the thrills that come with riding a motorcycle are what motorcycle-owners look forward to every time they ride. Because of my interest, I decided to do a little research on new motorcycle models and contemporary motorcycle safety measures.

The 2018 line of Harley-Davidson motorcycles is excellent. Particularly, the 2018 Harley-Davidson Street 500 stood out to me. This model comes equipped with a 500cc liquid-cooled revolution X engine designed to allow safe, controlled, and comfortable travel on urban streets. Harley-Davidson’s website explains that this engine is perfect for getting through any hole that opens in front of you with its smooth response to the progressive throttle. The Street 500 comes with a sharp, dark look. The exhaust is all-black, has black-cast aluminum wheels, and it is fashioned with a chrome medallion. The motorcycle really is a beautiful and powerful machine. In addition to its top-tier engine and its sleek look, the model comes with optimal anti-lock brakes giving you the confidence you need to know your motorcycle will function properly while on the road. Unfortunately, not even this safe brake system can prevent some of the most catastrophic accidents, which are head-on motorcycle collisions.

While my research of the Street 500 was exciting, I was more intrigued with my research of head-on motorcycle collisions. Specifically, I came across an article by McCutchen & Sexton that succinctly explained these types of disastrous accidents. It corroborated my initial thoughts that there is nothing quite like the experience of riding a motorcycle. In fact, it is no surprise that riding a motorcycle is a hobby for millions of Americans. The article explained the harsh reality that even the most experienced, skilled, and seasoned motorcyclists riding the safest bikes are helpless when it comes to head-on motorcycle collisions.

The article explained how head-on collisions are one the most dangerous types of accidents, and that they can usually be avoided had the other driver not been negligent. Often, inattentive drivers may be using their cell phones, disobeying traffic laws, or looking away from the roadway as they drift into the oncoming lane. Usually, the peripheral vision of these negligent drivers is not enough to spot a motorcyclist in the oncoming lane. The result of this negligence is an unavoidable, catastrophic head-on impact. If the impact is bad enough, these collisions can result in death for the motorcyclists.

Again, I love motorcycles, and I’m very excited to read about the features of the new Harley-Davidson Street 500. However, not even this machine is safe when it comes to head-on collisions with passenger vehicles. For motorcyclists, it is important to keep this in mind when hitting the open road.
